A Great Performance for the Girls Borough Sports Squad!

On Wednesday 21st June, the Stanley Park Athletics squad competed in the annual Borough Athletics Championship at the David Weir Centre. This year was unlike other years as the students not only had to deal with preparing for their event but also competing on the day that was the hottest day in June so far, in conditions up to 34 degrees!

Carla Rowley-Valencia in Year 7 started the competition off on a high for Stanley Park, storming home in the 1500m to take the gold with no other competitors in sight. Sophie McLaren in Year 7 shortly after took gold in the Javelin with a throw of 19.70m and Isabel Foley took the Bronze in the Year 9 Javelin.

Up next on the track was Lydia Soltana in the 800m who lead from the start and never let anyone past her. She had a sprint finish to the end, but held on to take Stanley Park’s 3rd Gold of the Championships.

Meanwhile on the other side of the track Evelyn Stephenson-Oliver for Year 9 and Charlotte Page for year 10 were competing in the finals of the 80m hurdles. Both students had been training hard at club which clearly paid off, Evelyn took the gold for Year 9 with a time of 12.56, second place was over 2 seconds behind her and Charlotte took the silver.

The girls’ team had a really successful morning with medals from Lucy Edwards in Year 8 taking bronze in the year 8 Javelin and Michelle Rodrigues in Year 7 taking the bronze in the discus. There were also a number of students who just missed out on a medal, giving them something to focus on achieving for next year’s Boroughs.

In the afternoon, the girls continued their successful run. On the track Tia Seale clinched bronze in a very tight year 9 100m final and the year 7, 8 and 9 4x100m relays teams all made it through to the finals, with the year 9 girls’ team taking the bronze.

On the field, Lulu Frawley in Year 9 retained her Borough high jump title, Emily Wright took the silver in the Year 10 javelin and Poppy Bowyer-Mitchell just missed out on the gold in the year 8 long jump. Morgan Searle and Brooke Fido took the last of the field medals for Stanley Park with a silver in the Year 9 long Jump and a bronze on the year 8 High Jump.

Well done to all the girls that competed in the Borough Championships on a very hot day, you all did amazing and contributed to our 5th place overall for the Girls and 3rd place overall as a mixed school. Bring on next year!
