Years 9 - 11

In Years 9, 10 and 11 we aim to:

  • provide a range of qualifications from which learners can choose programmes that meet their needs and gain credits for their achievements;
  • ensure that the qualifications provided are worthwhile and valued and that learners can combine academic; and vocational studies appropriately and coherently;
  • offer some scope for specialisation;
  • encourage a high level of key skills;
  • offer clear progression routes into our Post 16 Centre, local FE colleges, further training and employment.
At the start of year 9 students are carefully placed into very small Vertical Tutor Groups with students from the older year groups. They remain in these for the remainder of their time at Stanley Park High. Please see the Tutoring page on this web site for further details.

In Years 9, 10 and 11 students continue with their core subjects (English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies (RS), ICT and PE. Within Science students have the opportunity to study Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) or Double Science or BTEC Science. English, Mathematics, Science (All types) and RS are taught in Set Groups. They have the following period allocation with each period being of 50 minutes duration.

These Taster Options have been in operation since 2005 and it is an initiative that many schools have chosen to adopt following our success. The Taster Options attempt to give the students an exciting though accurate ‘taste’ of the subject’s examination syllabus, in order that it can support a student’s decision–making process. By the end of the Autumn Term each student will have ‘Tasted’ six options. They then select three to study from the start of the Spring Term through to the external examination at the end of Year 11.

This Options Process has proved very successful and the number of students asking to change subjects after the start of the Year 9 Spring Term is less than 1%.
