Years 9 - 11

In Years 9, 10 and 11 we aim to:

  • provide a range of qualifications from which learners can choose programmes that meet their needs and gain credits for their achievements;
  • ensure that the qualifications provided are worthwhile and valued and that learners can combine academic; and vocational studies appropriately and coherently;
  • offer some scope for specialisation;
  • encourage a high level of literacy and numeracy;
  • offer clear progression routes into our Post 16 Centre, local FE colleges, further training and employment.

In Year 9 students continue with their core studies in English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies (RS), and Physical Education (PE). In RS they begin the GCSE course and this is completed at the end of Year 11. Throughout the year the students have the following timetable allocations, with each period being of 50 minutes duration.

The Electives have been a part of the Year 9 curriculum offer since 2005. Given their success, it is an initiative that many schools have chosen to adopt. Each Elective gives the students an exciting, though accurate, ‘taste’ of the subject’s examination syllabus, in order that it can support the decision–making process. Each term the students choose four electives, so by the end of year 9 they will have experienced 12 electives. Towards the end of the Summer Term students have to select 4 electives that they wish to study throughout Years 10 and 11.
