Headteachers' Blog

Week Commencing Monday 12th December 2011

It is with great sadness that we collectively say goodbye to our old school building on the 16th December 2011. Since its opening as a school on 31st August 1931 it will have witnessed much and I am sure that it could tell us a few stories. We remember with fondness the contribution the building has made to the learning of so many people. However, we look forward to our new school.

It was in July 2006 that we were told that we were to become the One School Pathfinder for the London Borough of Sutton. Over 5 years in the making, we are indebted to and give thanks to the many people who have helped make our dream become a reality: the architects (Haverstocks), the builders (BAM), Sutton Councillors and LEA Officers. As always there are individuals that I would wish to thank for their special contribution. Ms Jane Pascoe (Chair of Governors) has worked tirelessly to ensure that our current and future students get the best possible provision. Finally, I would wish to say a massive thank you to Mr Alex Thomson, who as Deputy Headteacher has taken the lead role on behalf of the school. His demands for excellence, willingness to ask the challenging questions and eye for the fine detail will ensure a truly fantastic school.

Last week we started our Christmas Celebrations with the Christmas Carol Concert at Carshalton Methodist Church. It was a truly memorable experience with over 70 students, across all year groups, reading, singing and playing a combination of traditional Christmas readings and carols, as well as some more modern poems and Xmas Pop Songs. Thank you to the parents for their support and to Ms Green for organising a tremendous event. A video will be available of the website shortly.

The week ahead

A polite reminder that we have decided that the school will close for business at the normal time on Friday 16th December. Students will be in normal lessons throughout the day. They will be required to be in full school uniform.

The next Blog will be on Wednesday 4th January 2012. In this Blog I will be able to give you an update on the progress teachers are making with the move. I am sure there will be some attached photographs of the site to excite the students. After this special Wednesday Blog, future ones will revert to Mondays, starting with Monday 9th January 2012.

We wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.

Week Commencing Monday 5th December 2011

Sporting Success
Last Friday we competed in the South London Table Tennis Finals in the U16 Boys and U13 Girls age groups. The U16s won the tournament without conceding a game, beating Wilsons 8-0 in the final. The U13s also won without conceding game, beating Woodcote 8-0 in the final. Between both teams they only dropped three sets in the whole tournament. Both will go on to the South East Regional final to be held on Saturday 14th January 2012 at Redbridge Leisure Centre. The tournament is sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation and there should be an article going into the local paper.

Boys U16s: George Harris, Mickel Miller, Guy Webster and Jamie Wolstencroft

Girls U13s: Emma Butt, Vicky Godfrey, Paige Hersey and Abbie Negus

Alex Creamore, Hannah Heinpuu and Dan Harris have been selected to represent Sutton Schools at the Surrey Cross Country championships in January following success in the Sutton Championships held earlier in November.

Many Congratulations to all of the students.

End of Term
We have decided that the school will close for business at the normal time on Friday 16th December. Students will be in normal lessons throughout the day. They will also be required to be in full school uniform. We hope this doesn’t come across as lacking Christmas spirit and goodwill. However, given the loss of learning time because of our move, we felt it inappropriate to reduce it even further by closing early.

We kindly request that you support this decision.

Buses to the New Site
We are in the final stages of organising the special bus service between Shotfield and the new school site. It is likely that Mitcham Belle will be providing two double-decker buses at both the beginning and end of the day. In the morning the buses are likely to leave at 7:35am, 7:40am, 7:55am and 8:00am. To minimise the pressure on these buses we ask that students that currently travel on the 154 bus continue to do so. They should then get off the 154 bus at the bottom of Fountain Drive and walk the last 400 metres to the school. If students do wish to get our dedicated buses we strongly advise students to get the earlier buses. Students that are unable to get on the 8:00am bus will have sufficient time to get to school on the 154 bus or by walking. Students who are late will still be subject to the current detention arrangements. At the end of the day the buses will each make two return trips to Shotfield.

January Examinations
The January Examination timetable for students in years 10, 11, 12 and 13 is on this website. Please note that all of the January examinations will take place on our current site in the Sports Hall or Post 16 Centre.
