Headteachers' Blog

Week Commencing Monday 27th February 2012

Last Thursday we had a very successful BTEC inspection by the External Assessor. There was lots of positive praise regarding the progress made on the five targets from last year and the quality of the learning programmes being delivered. It goes without saying that the Assessor was very impressed with our facilities. She was glowing about the atmosphere within the school.

You will have no doubt read about the Government’s attack on vocational qualifications and BTECs in particular. It is likely that in 2014 many of these qualifications will be losing their current weighting and will not be considered as a part of any league tables. Students studying these courses should not be concerned by the Government’s actions. We fully value vocational education and have no intention in dropping these subjects just because they have disappeared from the league tables. If students wish to study these subjects and they are valued by business and industry, we will continue to offer them. As a part of this process we will be having discussions with these organisations such as the Royal Horticultural Society, Headmasters (Hairdressing), and Jace (Childcare) to ensure that they are fit for purpose. Further details will be provided after the Government announces its final decisions during March.

We have a Parent Governor vacancy. Please see the vacancies section, in the ‘About’ Tab of our website if you are interested in joining our Governing Body and playing a crucial role in the future of the school.

Opening Events

You either will have attended or read about our Opening Event that was held just before half term. On the afternoon of 9th February 75 special guests toured the school. Students and teachers then gathered in the Atrium to listen to a speech by the Leader of the Council, Sean Brennan, who officially opened the school by cutting the ribbon with four students, one from each of the small schools.  The four students were Tim Bent, Amy Smyth, Ghena Santiago and Bradley Dixon.

After the official ceremony we had ‘Open House’ for parents and local residents. This attracted in excess of 2000 people, no doubt buoyed by the presence of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. In officially opening our Sports Hall Mr Johnson said: "The practical work ethic espoused by Stanley Park High has already proved to be an enormous success story for the young people of Sutton, and because of these wonderful new facilities the benefits are also soon to be felt by adult learners in the borough. The school is working to equip people with the skills they need to enter the challenging world of work, which is essential if we are to avoid letting a generation of talent go to waste in this difficult jobs market. It's a great honour to open such a fantastic new community resource”.

Overall it was a fantastic day and we have since received much feedback about the quality of the building and more importantly the positive impression our students created.

Ski Trip

Our annual ski trip to Austria returned at the weekend. By all accounts they had a fantastic time and the only injury sustained was a sprained ankle. They had to contend with some very challenging weather including heavy snowfall and very low temperatures. Nevertheless the teachers have stated that all of the students behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school. Such is the nature of skiing; there will soon be announcements about the planning for 2013.

Week Commencing Monday 6th February 2012

A snowy start to the week! We certainly get more snow up here than at the old site. Nevertheless, we will be operating normally.

Last week we held our Year 11 Parents’ Evening. Parents who were unable to attend that evening should have received their child’s report. If you haven’t, or if you any concerns regarding the content of the report, please contact your child’s Tutor before Half Term.

Our opening event takes place this Thursday. Parents should have received an invitation to visit the school between 4-6pm. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, will be visiting our school at this time and he will officially open our Sports Hall during his visit.

The timing is ideal as we have just been informed that we have been awarded 160 free tickets for the Olympics and Para Olympics. I expect that the Mayor of London will refer to these tickets when he gives his speech. We are yet to decide how we will distribute these free tickets amongst our students. Further details will be available in this Blog in the coming months.

Parking is likely to be very difficult for this event, so we politely request that you try and find alternative forms of transport. In order to relieve parking pressure we will be operating a "Park and Ride" scheme. You will be able to park at our old site and be transported to our new site by bus for free. This service will be operated by Mitcham Belle.

As for the Opening event, please can parents continue to avoid driving your child to and from school. The problems at the end of the day have increased with the cold weather, with some parents parking across the pavements. This is placing our students at unnecessary risk, as they have to leave the pavement and go onto the road in order to pass the cars.

On Friday our annual ski trip departs for Austria. Conditions in the ski resorts are supposed to be excellent, although a little cold. We wish them a safe and enjoyable trip.

We finish for the Half Term holiday this Friday. It will be a normal day with students being dismissed at the usual time. Please note that it is not a Mufti-Day. Our next Mufti-Day will be held on Friday 30th March, the last day of term, and will be in aid of Sports Relief. Our finish time on the 30th March will be 11:40am.
